Remember This One???

Z is all about sounding out words lately.  He makes these crazy words using his letters and does his best to sound them out :)  Last night he was sitting with his alphabet puzzle and was trying to sound out the word that the alphabet makes ;)  This got me thinking about Big Bird and this song....  so I ran to YouTube to search for it (you've got to love the Internet!!).  We found it and Z and Lil' C got a big kick out of it.  So here it is for you :)

Bringing Back Sunday Family Dinners

That is me in the pink sweater and the great headband :)
Back in the day, my Noni would host regular family Sunday dinners.  The entire extended family would gather for some chips and clam dip, pot roast and potatoes and some yummy dessert.  After dinner there were many laughs over a game of Pictionary, Balderdash (I think we used the dictionary back then), cards or other family game.  It was tradition and a great chance for the family to be together.  I have a lot of great memories from those Sundays.

My family sees each other a lot during "lake season" (May-October) and then at the holidays but then there is a big lull where we don't see to much of one another.  We gather individually but it is rare that the whole group gets together.  With my dad leaving for Turkey in a few weeks and my sister and brother in-law working most Sundays, I took yesterday as a chance to bring back the old Sunday Family Dinners.  I invited the entire family over and by some miracle they ALL came :)  We did a pot luck meal and feasted on homemade bruschetta, lasagna, homemade pizza rolls, strawberry salad, corona (my dad's contribution ;)) and "Pinkalicious Cupcakes".

This was our first event with a kids table and G and Z sat together at his little table.  The conversation coming from that table was priceless....I so wish I had pictures and video!!!   G kept making sure that we were all still there (she couldn't see everyone) and would call out names every once and awhile.  It was so cute :)

After dinner we gathered round the Wii (not sure what my Noni would have thought of this) and played a little Rockband with the kids.  G sang Love Story by Taylor Swift and Z rocked out to Rio and Sweet Home Alabama :)   We had some great food, shared a lot of laughs and it was a nice family moment.  I am not sure when the next family moment will be but I do hope that in the future we can have more Sunday Family Dinners....at least one a year :)

Project Simplify

I am super excited to be participating in Simple Mom's "Project Simplify" starting March 7th.  This goes right along with our journey to simplify our home and life.  My buddy Connie introduced me to Tsh and Simple Mom a little over a year ago and I am so grateful that she did!  Tsh and her fabulous network of websites (back then it was only one) has helped me so much on this journey that I am on right now.  I read the websites daily, devoured her book over the holidays and have taken so many of her strategies and suggestions and made them my own.  We now have a Family Purpose Statement, my Family Management Notebook finally works for me, I have a weekly cleaning rotation that keeps cleaning manageable and I have stretched out her 10 day Spring Cleaning Schedule so that it fits my crazy schedule :)  I have learned so much from her and even wrote her a "fan" letter the other day after winning one of her fabulous giveaways.

So if you haven't heard of Simple Mom, go and check it out :)  This month of cleaning and organizing should be fun so join up (there are prizes!!).  I will be posting my own progress right here on my blog.  It all starts on Monday and I can't wait to see what areas she is going to have us attack :)  Happy Organizing!

A Spouses Guide to Surviving a Start-Up

I feel fully qualified to write this guide now, as S is now in his 5th Start-Up in 11 years :)  He has never worked for a company that was not a Start-Up, even the company he worked for in high school/college was one :) This current Start up is the second where he is one of the founders but regardless, each one has been a big risk.  S loves the risk, it is what makes it fun and exciting for him.  Working at Start Ups is to my husband what sky diving, gambling or drugs might be to other people.....it is his HIGH.

So how does a girl who grew up with a daddy who worked for the same company for 26 years and was usually home by 5:30 pm (he had a 10 minute commute) survive the instability and roller coaster ride that is the typical Start-Up??  How do we survive the long hours, the 3-4 hour daily commute and the fact that when daddy is home he is tied to his iphone and laptop??  I am not going to lie to you, it is not easy but I continue to learn on the job how to make it work.

In preparing for this post, I googled "Start-Up Wives" and found a support group for spouses of Start-Ups :)  I had no idea that such a thing existed, I excitedly went in and checked it out but it seems to be a ghost town.  Oh well...I did find a few other blog posts about the topic that I will read but in the meantime here are some things that we do to make life a little easier on all of us :)

1.  Schedule Family Time

This has been crucial for us, especially with small children.  Z and Lil' C miss their daddy so much and so anytime that they get with him is precious.  We have a rule that there are no computers/iphones allowed in their sight.  When daddy is with them, he needs to be with them 100%.

2.  Have A Family Daily Schedule

Our family schedule is very similar each day except as Z would say, "Saturday and Sunday mean that Daddy works from home!"   S's schedule is all over the place and the kids really don't know when and where they are going to see their daddy.  Because of this it has been so important for Z and Lil' C to be able to rely on their routine.

3.  IChat or Skype

S usually is gone in the morning before the kids wake up and comes home long after they are in bed.  IChat has been a Godsend for us because it allows Z and Lil' C to see their daddy and tell him about their day.  They love being "face to face" and it really is a special time for all of us right after dinner :)

4.  Involve Kids in Spouse's Work

S is working on an Iphone game and we have found that showing Z all that he is working on and now having Z "test" the game has really helped him to understand why Daddy is working so much.  S is very good about explaining all that he does in language that Z can understand and we are planning a visit to his office (although we have seen it on IChat) later this month.

5.  Schedule Couple Time

This has been really important to us during this time.  We rarely spend anytime together during the week (other than dueling laptops) and so we have tried to plan one night out and one night in a month.  We also try to put aside some time each day to chat (sometimes on the phone or IChat, sometimes in person).  This is a stressful time for us and unfortunately we take out our frustrations on each other.  This date time allows us to escape, reconnect and just have fun!

6. Find a Strong Support Network

I am blessed to have a strong network of family and friends.  My dad comes in the evenings once a week to play with the kids, we have lots of playdates, my SIL came for a few days to distract the kids...we are very fortunate.  This network doesn't always understand why S gave up the opportunity to take a secure Big Company job for this venture but as they start to see the product and try it out, they too are getting excited.  This whole venture is very difficult for my dad to understand and he is always coming at me with a lot of questions (I think he is afraid we will be living with him if this doesn't work out) but I try to reassure him that we are going to be okay :)

7.  Live on a Strict Budget

This is just common sense for all.  I understand that no job is truly secure but when the breadwinner works for a Start-Up...you never know if or when that next round of funding will come in.  This means that you always need to be saving for a "rainy" day.  We saved like crazy for the stage that we are in and now we need to make sure that we are very frugal so that we can run as long as possible :)

8. Have a Clean House

Our home use to be a stressful place filled with clutter.  Thanks to a lot of hard work and simplifying, S can now come home to a house which is much more at peace.  Having a clean house helps to decrease his stress level and thus ours.  It is a lot of hard work to keep things clean and orderly but it is the least I can do with all that he is doing to try to make this business work!

9.  Remember to LAUGH

One of my favorite sounds in the world is to hear S belly laugh :)  I try to bring the sillies out in him whenever I can, it is healthy to laugh after all.  We laugh with the kids, at silly sitcoms on TV, movies....wherever we can find laughs.

10.  Plan Mini Vacations

S is a walking Zombie right now.  Throughout his career he has had many periods of "Zombie Time" and we have planned mini vacations to help recharge him and keep him going.  This vacation need not be far away or expensive, just a chance to escape and not work for awhile.  We are hoping to plan one as soon as his company gets funded.  Keep your fingers crossed, this Momma needs a night away!!!!

11. Learn some Cheerleading Skills

Thank goodness my best friend was a URI cheerleader because I have learned so much from her :)  The truth is that I am S's biggest fan and cheerleader.  I try so hard to remain positive, upbeat and make sure that I tell him often how proud I am of him and what he is doing.  I am his sounding board, help him make simple decisions when he is too tired to function and cheer him on when he is blue.  This role is not always easy but it is crucial to helping him get through this crazy time.

Z and I recently read the Berenstain Bears, Count Their Blessings and he and I sat down and counted our own blessings.  Here is how it went:

Mom: I am blessed to have you, Lil' C and Daddy to love.
Z: I am blessed to have my hockey sticks to play with.
Mom:  I am blessed to be able to stay home with you guys full time.
Z:  I am blessed to have my toys.
Mom:  I am blessed to have this wonderful house to live in.
Z:  I am blessed to have this couch.
Mom:  I am blessed to have family and friends who love us.
Z:  I am blessed to have this chair.
Mom:  I am blessed to have good food to eat.
Z:  I am blessed to have you mommy (and then he hugged me).

I am so incredibly blessed!

Trying to Stay Positive

I had written a post last night called, "Grocery Store Rantings" (or something like that).  Some of you may have even read it in the hour or so it was posted this morning.  However, I woke up today and read it again and decided to delete it.  Yes I had a crummy trip to the grocery store on Saturday morning and have been under a lot of stress lately as I manage the house and kids by myself (S works 20/7) but that is no excuse for negativity.  To be honest, there is no room for negativity in my life right now.  I need to try to stay positive for the sake of my kids, my overworked and sleep deprived husband and for me!  I feel the best thing I can do right now is vent, look at the bright side and move on.

You see negativity everywhere you look.  Facebook is even depressing me lately.  All of the posts complaining about the weather are really starting to get old.  If I had a few free hours I would go back and check these peoples profiles back in December and January where they posted all about their excitement about the snow.  It is still February people, we have another few weeks before spring even gets here!  Live for today and not what you hope tomorrow will bring.  Yesterday, I couldn't help but smile when I looked outside and saw the beautiful winter wonderland.

So take a moment, count your blessings and try to find something positive to focus on today.  It will help your family, your outlook and your soul :)  Happy Monday!

A Touch of Spring

Today I packed away the snowmen and Valentine decorations, much to Z's dismay.  The two warm days we had last week, gave me a little bit of spring fever and I couldn't stand looking at the snowmen any longer (even though it is snowing right now).  When I went to take down the heart collage that I made out of the old Christmas cards though, I got a little sad.  I was not ready to say goodbye to these cute little faces, that brighten my day every time I walk into the kitchen.  So I decided to take them and create a little touch of spring.  This is the perfect cheery thing to look at on a snowy day like today :)

Here are a few other pictures that make me smile :)

Who Turns Down a Free Trip to Mexico???

Play del Carmen
Me, that is who.  This was not always the case mind you.  When they bumped us from our honeymoon resort 2 days before the wedding (can we say BRIDEZILLA??!??!?!) I begrudgingly graciously took the free trip to Mexico the following year to compensate.  Both trips were wonderful.  We stayed at all inclusive resorts where we spent most of our time lounging by the pool with a margarita in hand and would carefully plan out where we were going to eat that night :)  We also did some fun excursions and it was 12 wonderful days (and then 10 days the next year) with the man I love, pure heaven!

A few weeks ago, my dad called and told me that his company trip was to Mexico this year and that he would pay for his daughters and grandkids to go.  Son in-laws if available would have to pay their own way.  I went back and forth with this decision and finally decided that the best move for our family right now would be to stay home.  We did go cruising with Z when he was C's age but he was a pretty easy going kid, S came with me and only having one child while traveling (especially with 3 adults) was not bad at all.  This is not to say that we didn't have our challenges, but we were able to adapt to life on a ship with a toddler.   We also took him to Aruba when he was 2, again we had the two of us, only him and he was at a great age to enjoy the pool, sand and playground and did pretty well on the long flight down there.

Having two children does complicate things a bit and Lil' C is a mover and a shaker.  She is not going to sit tight in the security line let alone be entertained for four and a half hours on a plane.  And lets just say that by some miracle we make it to Mexico without the other passengers attacking us, then we have to deal with the three of us sharing a room, nap schedules and a baby who does not sit still and will only last 20 minutes in a restaurant setting.  In the end I decided that I would be more relaxed spending the week in my babyproofed house than I would in beautiful, sunny Mexico.  I know that some of you must think I am crazy but at this point in our lives, we are just not up for this adventure.  I LOVE Mexico and I am so blessed that I have been able to go there 3 times, I want my next trip to be just as special as the first three.  So when the kids are older or when S and I save up some money and are ready to leave them for a few days, we will go back again.

Look at how Happy I am :)

Look at how relaxed my husband is, if you could only see him now :(  He is so sleep deprived and stressed!

"We Must Save the CHICKEN!!!!"

This was what S woke up to at 6:15 am on Saturday morning.  The power had gone out at 1AM and after throwing all of our food out in the last three major power outages, I was hell bent to save our chicken (especially the one I drove 45 minutes to the crazy farm to buy from a lady covered in blood and feathers).  Poor S dragged himself away from the "warm" blankets and joined Lil' C and I downstairs in the 61 degree family room.  After both of us being up all night (well S would like me to point out that I had gotten about 3 hours of sleep before the power went out, he was up late working until the power outage) and no way to make coffee....we were pretty cranky.

Our family lives for our white noise, we can't sleep without it.  When the power went out, so did Lil' C's noise machine and the giant fan in the hallway....leaving the house very quiet.   Every cry, whine, snore and stir could be heard and on top of all this, my poor sister in-law was visiting so I was paranoid that the children would disturb and wake her.  Lil' C woke up at least 5 times, Z came running down the hall screaming (we quickly snatched him up and threw him in our bed before he woke the baby) and Lil' C was up for good at 5 AM.  While reading books to Lil' C, I remembered the 2 months worth of chicken in our downstairs freezer and panic set in.  "We Must Save the CHICKEN!!!!"

S went down to the basement, filled a cooler with snow and put all of our chicken into it.  He then buried the cooler in snow on our back deck :)  I then filled a trash bag with frozen food and he buried that as well.  The cold stuff went into coolers with snow and I was determined to take it wherever we went (I am on a tight budget people!).  S was exhausted and could see his carefully planned work weekend slipping away from him.  He and his team are very close to launching their iphone app and this weekend was crucial.  Between getting no sleep, dealing with the power outage and having no internet access....things were not looking good.

After breakfast at the diner (where the waitress could identify us as one of the families who had lost power, maybe we smelled???) we decided to pack up and head to my moms.  Our cold food and family spent the day with mom while S tried desperately to stay awake to work.  Luckily the power was restored in the early afternoon and we did not lose one morsel of food!  It was not the weekend we had planned out but it was an adventure and I feel it is crazy times like these that bring families closer together.  Thanks Auntie A for all of your help and for going along for the crazy ride!  And thanks mom (and dad) for taking us in :)  Now everyone go and kiss your electric meter and be grateful for all that it does for you :)
