Back to Basics

This past year has been the start of an important journey for S and I, the journey to simplify life.  For the past six months we have been working hard to simplify our finances, schedules, diets, home....US.  We have both decided that living a rational minamalist life is what we want and we are on our journey to make that happen.

Whenever I think about this journey, the Green Acres theme song comes into my head ;)

Not that we are fancy people (we are so not) or that we are giving up suburbia to live on a farm (S has already lived the farm life as a child....although I might want a few chickens)....it just makes me think of our journey to simplify.   Our journey to rid our home, brains, bodies and lives of clutter.  We long for a house that is simplistic and easy to manage.  A house that does not take up our time on weekends to clean so that we can be out there enjoying life.  We want to no longer spend our money on useless stuff but rather save up for wonderful experiences with our children.  They said on Oprah the other day that things will bring you happiness for about 9 months but a wonderful experience will bring you happiness for life.

As I have mentioned before, I am a bit of a shopaholic.  I was not one to buy fancy shoes or handbags but I lived for my trips to the Gap, Old Navy, Target (oh Target, I could not leave you without spending at least $100 on crap), Amazon (my virtual trips) and many other retailers.  I love the high I get from spending money and now I live in a pile of crap!  A pile of crap that I am working really hard to sell and donate (for pennies).  I want to change....I need to change!

So right now I am very busy selling items on ebay and getting things ready for our Spring yard sale.  I am also going room by room and simplifying and decluttering.  It is a difficult process and really hard to find time with two little ones scurrying about but I am taking it slow and celebrating each success.  Right now our Family Room is complete and S and I go there whenever we need a Zen moment ;)  As I said this is a journey and we are so excited to be going through it together as a family!

I am going to clean out my closet and have been getting busier on ebay myself. I wish I could convince my hubby too.

Downsizing is the best thing we've ever done. I can't imagine going back to all of the stuff...and extra room (that we didn't need).

I do want a designer handbag though....

I swear I left a comment here the other day but I think maybe I got hung up during the word verification process...anyway, clutter gives me a royal headache and I need to take some lessons from you.

When I was moving a few years ago I think I may have gotten a little over zealous in throwing things out though. I am missing at least 4 things that I swear I would never have thrown away, yet they are gone. I think in the heat of the moment I tossed them and now I regret it. I must have just lost my mind. There has to be a happy medium! I'm still trying to declutter. I did my office on New Years day and it felt so good. I see clutter creeping back in though so it's a constant battle.

Anyway, I like your idea! Hope you and your family are doing well. Seems like just yesterday lil c was born...yikes!
